On May 2, 2012, VMware launched several new and updated products that comprise the End-User Computing Solutions. These products include Horizon Application Manager 1.5, VMware Project Octopus, VMware Zimbra 7.2, vCenter Operations for VMware View, and VMware View 5.1. All of these products together help IT take the next evolutionary step in the Post-PC era. Clearpath Solutions Group will be breaking down the full solution set for you, but today we want to focus on the first building block of the new End-User computing environment – VMware View 5.1. In VMware View 5.1, VMware introduced several new features that further reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) associated with deploying a virtual desktop infrastructure, promising increased performance with lower hardware costs, and simplified migration of desktops and user data into your company’s desktop computing cloud. A host of new storage-centric features introduced in VMware View 5.1 are the following:

The first time I logged into a Nexus 7000, I was a bit intimidated, as there were enough differences between it and the 6500s that I had been more comfortable with in the past. Here are some tips to try and make the transition a little easier.

1. cli alias name wr copy run start
This is actually the first thing I type into any Nexus that I configure. I know that Cisco is trying to train engineers to get out of the habit of using wr and, instead, wasting characters by typing out the more formal copy running-config startup-config I prefer to find alternate ways around the problem.

2. The base VDC should always be left as an administrative VDC
Presuming that you've purchased the VDC licensing (because who doesn't want 3 extra Nexii for the low cost...

I've had several people ask me about using CD/DVD drives on VMware View virtual desktops.  Specifically...

  • Can I use a CD or DVD drive with VMware View Desktops?
  • Why doesn't the CD or DVD drive on my re-purposed PC with the VMware View Client pass through to the View desktop?
  • How can I make a CD or DVD drive work on my View Desktop?
  • Are there specific CD/DVD drives that are supported on VMware View?
  • How can I present a CD image (.ISO) to all View Desktops?

CD/DVD Devices in a View Environment - What works, what doesn't?

First, the bad news.  When using PC over IP (PCoIP) as the connection protocol, IDE, SCSI, or SATA attached CD or DVD (or BluRay, HD-DVD, LaserDisc) drives local to the VMware View Client are not passed through to the VMware View virtual desktop.  This quite simply means that the internal CD drive of your re-purposed desktop will not be mapped to the View desktop...

The concept of “Any Server, Anywhere” is becoming more and more ubiquitous, particularly in a world that is heavily dependent on VMware and the use of vMotion.  To build a true cloud architecture that allows virtual servers to be migrated between any host devices at any point in the network, transparently to the end user, one of two things must happen:

  1. Layer 2 boundaries must be extended between all switches that service host devices.
  2. Virtual layer 2 connections must be created between switches that service host devices.

As most engineers are acutely aware, extended layer 2 architectures are sub-optimal for a number of reasons, including:

  • Extended failure domains – Joining the two locations at layer 2 ensures that a failure at one site will be duplicated at the second.
  • Limits bandwidth by only actively using a single path between any two points in the environment – Traditional Spanning Tree Protocol ensures only one...

On behalf of Clearpath and the greater VMware community, I would like to congratulate Josh Townsend (www.twitter.com/joshuatownsend) and Jason Shiplett (www.twitter.com/jshiplett) for being honored as 2012 VMware vExperts. The annual judging for the VMware vExpert title recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed to the community of VMware users over the past year and acknowledges an individual’s commitment to sharing their knowledge and passion for VMware technology above and beyond their job requirements. These are values fundamental to Clearpath’s mission and we are proud to have such dedicated engineers as part of our team.

Josh and Jason’s contributions go far beyond their deep level of technological expertise. They have taken an active role, both on and off-line, in furthering the awareness and adoption of VMware technologies and solutions...

In case you haven’t heard, VMware Forum 2012 is making the rounds again. Starting in early April on the west coast and making its way across the country over the course of the next several months, these are medium-sized events where virtualization-minded IT pros and execs can come and learn about the many different VMware products and technologies. These events are smaller than VMworld or Partner Exchange, but larger than most VMware User Group (VMUG) meetings or conferences. And this year, Clearpath is proud to co-sponsor the Washington D.C event on June 19 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in downtown D.C..

With that out of the way – in my experience, events like VMware Forum are great for a few reasons:

  • Networking with peers
  • Visiting the Solutions Exchange
  • Hands-on Labs

I’m not trying to discount the actual content of the event. There...
